Two huge concrete tanks of oil behind the Tate Modern, which was used 30 years may become the "most exciting new space for art in the world" during the Olympics, President of Tate said yesterday.
Launching organization annual report, Mr. Brown said phase one of the Tate Modern £ 215m expansion plans will be open next summer as part of the 2012 London Festival, the big bang finale Cultural Olympiad.
Tate had hoped the full expansion of the project will be completed by 2012, but the official acknowledged on Thursday that it will not happen.Phase two, the building above the tanker, will now be open "no later than in 2016."
Which will open next year are two 30-feet wide and seven meters high concrete chamber. They will be known as - Oil Tanks - just as it is today world famous Turbine Hall of the former power station retained its original name. They will be space for installation, and live performances, films, lectures and symposiums among others.
